This is a fascinating painting by Murillo. It’s hard to imagine that he had the artistic energy to paint both “The Martyrdom of St Andrew” and the “Soult Immaculate Conception” in the same year! Both were painted late in his career (1678) about three years before his death while he was in his early 60’s. I think they both hang in the Museo del Prado in Madrid. Have you visited there during Mercedarian travels to Spain?
I particularly enjoy his use of angels. They’re not overly clear in this painting, but it’s a great scene of them sitting on the clouds watching St. Andrew’s Martyrdom unfold. I have to wonder if there isn’t a key message in plain site by the prominent featuring of the horse’s ass -- perhaps Murillo’s Spanish opinions of the Greek showing through?! :)
